Although water is abundant in Bangladesh, safe drinking water is still scarce due to different levels of water contamination, including arsenic groundwater contamination, and microbial contamination of surface water. The overall objective of Water Safety Plan 2014 is to ensure water safety, and hence to protect public health. WSPs are system-specific and as complicated or simple as the systems to which they are applied. So a water safety plan for a household-level hand tubewell will be relatively simple whereas a WSP would be much more complex for a piped water supply system in a city involving a treatment plant and distribution network. It is important to recognize that a Water Safety Plan should continue to be used for as long as a water supply system remains in operation.
